Peony Pavlion

CONCEPT
The Peony Pavilion is a classic Kunqu opera written in 1598 by Tang Xianzu during the Ming dynasty. The story follows Du Liniang, a sheltered young woman who falls in love with
a scholar she meets in a dream while wandering through a spring garden. Lovesick and consumed by longing, she dies, yet her passion transcends death. Her spirit returns, reunites with the scholar, and ultimately, love restores her back to life.

In the triptych, I divide the story into three parts: Meeting, Lovesick, and Revival. Like an immersive theatre experience, the audience travels through a traditional Chinese garden. The scene shifts as the camera passes through garden gates and windows. In this concept, I blend romance, dream imagery, and poetic lyricism to explore themes of desire, fate, and the tension between rigid social norms and the freedom of the human heart.
